For some reason, society seems to need prisons. Mallorca is no exception. A few years ago, a new prison was inaugurated in Palma de Mallorca. The old and previous prison had grown out of its capacities.
Palma’s new Centro Penitenciario has facilities for 1,900 inmates, but currently 1,581 prisoners share the institution with 519 inmates awaiting their court sentences, thus already exceeding the new capacity by almost ten percent.
The more serious offenders are usually doing their time somewhere else, often in Madrid.
