I could not resist taking a photograph when I saw this horseshoe converted into a handle at a local barn door.
In Mallorca, horseshoes are not seen as good luck charms the way they are in Northern Europe. When a horse or a mule needs a new ferradura, the local ferrer is commissioned. If the horseshoe needs replacing the obsolete iron piece is saved from oblivion by way of transformation into some other function such as seen here. Life in the countryside and work on a finca farmyard is simply too strenuous for time to be wasted with sentimentalities.
In Mallorca, in matters of good luck or protection one turns to the professionals, i. e. one’s patron saint or the Virgin Mary.
Amén.
