Mallorca is in the midst of its Firas de Tardor celebrations, the autumnal fairs and markets. Llucmajor had its firas in October, and Inca was celebrating its three successive autumn firas over the last three weekends, which will now culminate next Thursday in the Dijous Bo market, the biggest market on the island. Last weekend just gone, it was Muro’s turn with its annual Fira de Tardor. Part of the activities was a Concurs de Carabasses (pumpkin competition). The heaviest carabassa weighed in at 82 kg and had been submitted by Vicenç Martorell Carbonera. The proud winner was rewarded with a 250 € cash prize. Runners-up came in with 65.5 and 65 kg, respectively. Not in the competition were six giant pumpkins, submitted and exhibited by the Colla Boines Negres from Sant Feliu de Codines in mainland Spain, between Barcelona and Vic. Their specimen weighed in heavily in excess of 200 kg, with 265.5 kg being the biggest of the monsters. Pumpkin seeds of the giant carabasses were handed over to the Muro townhall and will be available free for distribution once dried, in about two weeks time. Next weekend (November 20th/21st), Caimari will hold its Fira de s’Oliva de Caimari, whilst Llubí will hold its Fira de sa Mel next Sunday (November 21st). Mancor de la Vall will hold its Fira from November 23rd to 28th, culminating in the Fira de s’Esclata-sang i la Muntanya (mushroom and setas fair) on Sunday, November 28th. Hold your horses.
